When Shared Hosting Isn't Enough: Signs You Need a Managed VPS

Last year we migrated a Sarajevo-based e-commerce store off shared hosting on a Tuesday afternoon. By Wednesday morning, their page load times had dropped from 8.4 seconds to 1.2 seconds. The Numbers That Tell the Story

Shared hosting works by packing hundreds of websites onto a single physical server. You share CPU, RAM, disk I/O, and network bandwidth with everyone else on that machine. When your neighbor runs a badly coded cron job at 2 AM, your site suffers too.

  • 10,000-15,000 monthly visitors: You'll start seeing intermittent slowdowns during peak hours. Not catastrophic, but noticeable.
  • 20,000-30,000 monthly visitors: Response times become inconsistent. Some pages load in 2 seconds, others take 6+. Google notices.
  • 40,000+ monthly visitors: You're almost certainly hitting resource limits regularly. 503 errors appear. Your hosting provider may throttle or suspend your account.

These aren't hard rules - a well-optimized static site can handle more on shared hosting than a bloated WordPress install with 40 plugins. But they're reliable benchmarks from hundreds of migrations we've done.

CPU Steal: The Silent Killer

Here's something most people never check. On shared hosting, "CPU steal" measures how much processing time other tenants are taking from you. We've logged into client servers and seen CPU steal percentages above 30%. That means nearly a third of the processing power you're paying for is being consumed by someone else's workload.

On a VPS, your CPU allocation is yours. Period. We had a client running a WooCommerce store with about 800 products. Five Warning Signs You Can Check Right Now

You don't need server access to spot most of these. Here's what to look for:

1. Google PageSpeed scores dropping without code changes. If your score was 75 last month and it's 58 now - and you haven't changed anything - your server environment is degrading. We see this constantly with oversold shared hosts.

2. Intermittent 500 or 503 errors. Check your uptime monitoring (you do have uptime monitoring, right?). If you're seeing even 2-3 brief outages per week, that's resource exhaustion. 3. Slow TTFB (Time to First Byte). Open your browser developer tools, load your site, and check the TTFB. Under 200ms is good. Between 200-600ms is acceptable on shared hosting. 4. Database queries timing out. If your contact forms randomly fail, your search feature returns errors, or your CMS backend logs show "MySQL server has gone away" messages - your database connections are being throttled or killed.

5. Your hosting provider sends you "resource usage" warnings. This is the most obvious sign, and it means you've already been impacting other users on the server. Don't wait for the suspension email.
